Drinking Protein Before Bed = More Muscle!
A 2015 study published in the Journal of Nutrition studied whether or not drinking a protein shake before bed would result in more muscle. They looked at 44 male students for 12 weeks who either drank a protein shake before bed (just under 14 grams) or a placebo.
Increase in muscle.
Increase in strength.
The results showed both an increase in muscle size and strength in the protein consuming group.
"We conclude that protein ingestion before sleep represents an effective dietary strategy to augment skeletal muscle mass and strength gains during prolonged resistance-type exercise training in healthy, young men", the researchers wrote.
But is that the whole story? If you look at the study, you'll see that the protein before bed group actually received more daily protein than the control group. So was it really the feeding before bed that increased muscle or was it the greater protein intake?
Who knows...but either way, we like suggesting that people take in some protein right before bed with a little fat (and in some cases carbohydrates). This will enable you to get a good night's rest and keep your body anabolic throughout your sleeping hours. A scoop of Military Whey plus some oil or seed butter makes the perfect night cap!
